How to shoot and export better Instagram Reels

There is no magic fix for video. No setting, no lens, no export preset that suddenly makes footage look expensive. Too many things feed the final result for any one of them to carry it. What follows is the checklist we work to: what to look at before pressing record, how to finish it, and the export chain that has held up best on Instagram. Start here, then test it against your own gear, because some of it will be wrong for your camera.

Your camera is already fine

Phone or fancy, both work. Use what you have. A well-lit phone clip beats badly-lit footage off an expensive body, and it is not a close contest.

Shoot 4K when you can. Instagram will never show it, so that is not the reason. The reason is that those pixels get spent long before anything reaches upload. Stabilisation crops in while it steadies the shot. Pulling a vertical frame out of horizontal footage throws away most of the width. A slow digital push on a static shot is close to free coverage, but only if there is resolution left to spend on it. Frame it properly anyway. Extra pixels are insurance, not a cure for bad framing.

If you're on an interchangeable-lens camera, spend time with the lenses you own before buying another. Wide lenses fit more in, telephotos compress and isolate. DXOMARK publishes measured sharpness, distortion and aberration data for a lot of lenses, which is a decent way to learn where yours is strong and where it falls apart.

The three dials

ISO — find your camera's sweet spot

Think of it as sensitivity to light: low for bright scenes, high for dark ones, grainier as it climbs. How high you can push before it falls apart varies enormously between cameras, so it's worth actually finding out rather than assuming. Shoot the same scene at a spread of values and compare the shadows. Photons to Photos charts sensor noise across the ISO range and will often show you a step where your camera suddenly gets cleaner.

Aperture — widest is not best

A wide aperture, meaning the low number, blurs the background and makes a subject pop. A narrow one holds everything sharp, which is what you want for landscapes, architecture and anything with several people in it.

Wide open is a trap in video, though. Depth of field gets so thin that a subject leaning forward can put their own eyes out of focus.

The dashed band is what comes out sharp. Notice the background stays soft in both — you give up far less separation than you think, and you stop losing takes to someone leaning forward.

Two other things worth knowing. Most lenses are softer wide open, with more colour fringing towards the edges, so a stop or two down is often sharper as well as safer. And closing down does not keep helping forever: past a point diffraction sets in and fine detail starts going backwards again. Every lens has a range where it is happiest, and finding yours is twenty minutes with a tripod.

Shutter — double your frame rate, then break it

Shutter speed controls motion blur. Fast freezes movement, slow smears it. Start at roughly double your frame rate and you get blur that reads as normal.

A convention, not a law. Change it when the shot or the lighting asks you to.

Then break it on purpose. Faster for sports or aggressive handheld work, where you want every frame crisp. Slower when you want something dreamier. And break it straight away the moment you see flicker, which usually comes off LED panels, shop signs or a screen somewhere in the background. Banding rolling through the frame beats any rule ever written, so move the shutter until it goes.

Log, and knowing when to stop

Log profiles hold more detail in the shadows and highlights, which buys you room when grading. Worth using if your camera does it well and you are comfortable finishing the footage yourself. Not really worth it otherwise.

The thing to be careful about is clipping. Once a highlight is blown or a shadow is crushed, there's nothing there to recover — and a video file simply doesn't carry the latitude a RAW still does. Even RAW video, for all the storage it eats, doesn't match what you'd get from a stills file. So use the tools your camera gives you: waveform, zebras, false colour. Log looks flat on the monitor by design, and flat is not the same as safe.

Light, outfit, background

This is the part that actually decides how the video looks, and none of it costs anything.

  • Natural light is usually the easiest good light. Harsh midday sun is the hardest — move into open shade, bounce it off a wall, or put the sun behind your subject and light the face from the front.
  • Look at the background before you look at the settings. A bin, a pole, a bright window, a stranger. Two steps to the left fixes more than an hour of grading.
  • Make the subject separate from the scene. Blurred background is one way; a bright subject on a dark background, contrasting colours, or just moving them further from the wall all work as well.
  • Wardrobe is part of the image. Pick clothes against the location, not in a vacuum, or your subject blends into it. Avoid tight repeating patterns — they can shimmer on camera.
  • Keep it steady. Tripod, gimbal, or lean on something. Shaky is fine when it's a choice and obvious when it isn't.

Decide the shape before you shoot

Not everything has to be vertical. Instagram takes 9:16, 4:5 and 16:9 quite happily, and they behave differently once they get there. The mistake is not picking the wrong one. It is picking it after the shoot, when the framing is already locked.

The interface lands in the same place regardless of what you uploaded. What changes is how much of your picture ends up underneath it.
  • 9:16 fills the screen and gets the most attention. It also puts the caption, the buttons and your own name straight over the picture, so a fair amount of the frame is not really yours.
  • 4:5, which is 1080 × 1350, is the compromise. Still tall, still large in the feed, and most of the furniture sits off the picture rather than on it.
  • 16:9 lands as a band across the middle. Almost nothing overlaps it, which genuinely helps for anything with text or fine detail. It is also small, and on a phone small loses.

So: wide when the frame itself is the point and you want it left alone, vertical when you want the screen. Decide which before you set up. Cropping to a different shape afterwards is a rescue rather than a plan, because you lose the composition you built and only notice later that the head has ended up somewhere awkward.

Editing and grading

DaVinci Resolve is free and more than capable. CapCut on the phone is genuinely good for quick edits. Which one matters far less than the timing. Cut the shaky bits. Cut anything that has finished doing its job. Then let a shot breathe when the viewer needs a second with it.

For colour, the most common mistake is reaching for the look first. Get the image healthy, then style it:

  1. 1Interpret the footage correctly, so you're grading what the camera recorded rather than fighting it.
  2. 2Set exposure — overall brightness where you want it.
  3. 3Fix white balance, or shape it deliberately.
  4. 4Build contrast between shadows, midtones and highlights.
  5. 5Bring up saturation and colour density until it's rich, not loud.
  6. 6Check skin tones. Everyone notices when they're off and nobody can say why.
  7. 7Now add the look.
  8. 8Finish with texture — grain, halation, a little sharpening if it needs it.

Texture last, and gently. Grain on its own doesn't make footage look like film — the impression comes from highlight behaviour, colour response, contrast and halation all working together, and turning every one of them up gives you something that reads as processed rather than photographed. If the highlights already look good, leave them alone. There's a separate walkthrough of what each halation control actually does if you want to see what one of those controls is really doing.

Exporting for Instagram

The instinct is to export something small, on the grounds that Instagram will compress it anyway. That is backwards. Compress it yourself and Instagram then compresses your already-compressed file, and the second pass has less to work with than the first did. Hand it one clean source and let it compress once.

The route we use now

Export a high-quality 4K master out of Resolve in sRGB, already composed 9:16. Watch it through once. Get it onto the phone without anything touching it — AirDrop, a cable, or cloud storage set to keep originals. Not a messaging app; those hand you a smaller file and don't mention it.

Test it on a dummy account

Least exciting advice here, most useful. Make a second account that nobody follows. Upload the same ten seconds three or four times with different settings. Then look at all of them on the phone you actually use.

Compare skin texture, shadow gradients, how the grain survived, whether the sharpening turned into crunch. Do not judge any of it from the file sitting in your downloads folder. Nobody ever sees that one. The uploaded version is the product, so the uploaded version is what you check.

And that's really the whole point of this checklist. It's a guide, not a rulebook. Learn what each control changes, start somewhere sensible, then bend it because the image asked you to. Have fun with it, experiment, and don't be afraid to get it wrong a few times — that's how you find your own settings.
